Applications are invited for a 6-month Field Research Internship focused on a multi-taxa biodiversity survey in the Upper Bhima River Region of Maharashtra. This unique opportunity is offered by the Department of Environmental Studies, MIT-WPU Pune, and is based at the Chatur Ullu Lab.
We are seeking two enthusiastic interns to join an ongoing PhD research project. This internship provides an excellent platform for students to gain hands-on field experience, particularly those planning to conduct their master’s dissertations in ecology or environmental sciences.

About the Study
The research project investigates the response of multi-taxa biodiversity—specifically birds, butterflies, odonates (dragonflies/damselflies), fishes, and plants—along the Upper Bhima River. The study area spans 10 different sites ranging from the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary down to the Ujani Reservoir.
A key highlight of this project is its methodological approach, which integrates traditional field survey techniques with modern environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling.
Internship Roles and Responsibilities
- Bird Surveys: Conducting line transects along various river stretches.
- Odonate Surveys: Documenting dragonfly and damselfly populations along riverbanks.
- Fish Sampling: Utilizing cast nets and scoop nets for aquatic surveys.
- Flora and Fauna Surveys: Assisting with butterfly (Pollard walk) and plant quadrat surveys.
- Advanced Sampling: Recording field data and handling basic samples for eDNA analysis.
- Data Management: Engaging in Remote Sensing and GIS-based work, data analysis, and report writing.
- Community Research: Conducting socioecological surveys.
- Field Travel: Undertaking regular travel to Bhimashankar and other sites across the Upper Bhima basin.

Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for this fieldwork opportunity, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Academic Background: Must be a BSc (Third Year) or MSc student in Life Sciences, Zoology, Environmental Science, Wildlife Sciences, or a closely related field.
- Preference: Special preference will be given to Master’s students who are planning to align this project with their formal dissertation.
- Technical Skills: Prior knowledge of relevant taxa (birds, odonates, fish) and sampling techniques is preferred, but it is not mandatory as full training will be provided.
- Core Requirement: The most critical qualification is a genuine enthusiasm for rigorous fieldwork and a strong willingness to travel and work outdoors across varying weather seasons.
