Students from India’s most geographically remote regions now have a direct path to the country’s finest academic institutions. The All India Council for Technical Education launched the AICTE Samarthan scheme IIT IIM NIT on May 12, 2026 — a fully supported internship programme designed exclusively for students from Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and the North Eastern States. What Is the Samarthan Internship Connect Scheme?

The programme places selected students for 30-day on-campus internships at premier institutions across India. Host institutions include IITs, IIMs, IIITs, IISERs, NITs, NITTTRs, NIDs, NIFTs, and IHMs. A total of 611 students will participate during the current academic session 2026-27.
Who Is Eligible to Apply?
Eligibility is clearly defined. Students must meet all of the following criteria to qualify:
They must hold domicile status in one of the eligible regions — Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, or any of the North Eastern States. They must be currently enrolled at an AICTE-approved institution as an undergraduate or postgraduate student. Their discipline must fall within the approved categories — Engineering and Technology, Management, Design, Applied Arts and Crafts, BBA, BCA, or Hotel Management and Catering Technology.
Regarding how many times a student can apply — undergraduate students may avail up to two internships under this scheme during their entire degree programme. Postgraduate students may avail one internship.
What Will Participants Actually Do?
The 30-day on-campus internship is structured, immersive, and broad in scope. Participants will attend expert lectures delivered by faculty and researchers at host institutions. They will take part in hands-on laboratory training in their relevant discipline. Direct interaction with faculty members, researchers, fellow students, and alumni forms a core part of the daily experience.
Beyond the classroom and laboratory, participants will visit innovation and incubation centres. These visits provide direct exposure to entrepreneurship initiatives, research projects, and emerging technologies that most students from remote regions rarely encounter during their regular college education.
AICTE has stated clearly that the programme aims to strengthen students’ skills, confidence, and employability — three outcomes that participants from underserved regions consistently report as the most valuable results of similar institutional exposure programmes.
What Financial Support Does AICTE Provide?
The scheme removes every financial barrier to participation. Students selected under the Samarthan programme receive the following support:
Food and accommodation are arranged by the host institution and fully reimbursed by AICTE at a rate of Rs 500 per student per day for the entire 30-day duration. Travel expenses are reimbursed at sleeper class rail fare rate after the internship is successfully completed and required travel documents are submitted. No upfront costs fall on the student or their family at any point during the process.
This financial structure reflects the scheme’s core purpose — ensuring that geography and economic circumstance do not determine which students gain access to India’s best academic environments.

How to Apply Before the May 25 Deadline
The registration portal for the Samarthan scheme is currently open. The last date for submission of applications is May 25, 2026. Students should visit the official AICTE website at aicte-india.org to access the scheme portal and complete their application.
Before applying, gather the following documents. Your domicile certificate confirming residency in an eligible region. Your current college enrollment proof from an AICTE-approved institution. Your academic transcripts for the current programme. Proof of discipline — your degree programme must fall within the eligible categories listed above.
