A paid research internship at one of India’s most respected defence science laboratories is currently open for applications — and the deadline is May 15, 2026. The Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences, a premier research laboratory under DRDO and the Ministry of Defence, has released its official advertisement for the DRDO DIPAS paid internship 2026. Final year B.Tech and M.Tech students in engineering disciplines have a narrow window to apply. This article covers every detail — eligibility, stipend, vacancies, documents, and exactly how to submit before the deadline.
What Is DIPAS and Why Does This Internship Matter?
DIPAS — the Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences — operates under the Defence Research and Development Organisation, Government of India, Ministry of Defence. Its campus sits at Lucknow Road, Timarpur, Delhi-110054. A research cell named DIBER — the Defence Institute of Bioenergy Research — operates under DIPAS from Haldwani, Uttarakhand.
Both facilities conduct cutting-edge research in physiology, bioenergy, and allied sciences with direct defence applications. Working at either campus gives engineering students exposure to world-class research infrastructure, government scientists, and projects that most private sector internships simply cannot match. A DRDO internship certificate carries significant weight in both further academic applications and defence sector career pathways.
Available Vacancies and Locations
Nine vacancies are open across four engineering disciplines spread between Delhi and Haldwani:
Mechanical Engineering — 2 seats at DIPAS Delhi, 1 seat at DIBER Haldwani. Computer Science Engineering — 1 seat at DIPAS Delhi. Electronics Engineering — 1 seat at DIPAS Delhi, 1 seat at DIBER Haldwani. Electrical Engineering — 2 seats at DIBER Haldwani.
Vacancy numbers are tentative. If no suitable candidate is found in one discipline, DIPAS may reallocate that vacancy to another discipline with qualified applicants.
Who Is Eligible to Apply?
Eligibility is specific and non-negotiable. Only students entering their final year of B.E./B.Tech or M.E./M.Tech in the academic year 2026-2027 may apply. Students with any active backlogs in their academic record are not eligible under any circumstances. All applicants must be enrolled in a recognised engineering college and must submit a referral or sponsorship letter from their institution as part of the application.
Eligible branches include Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Electronics Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. Students from other disciplines are not eligible for this particular cycle.
Stipend and Financial Terms
Selected interns receive a total stipend of Rs 30,000 over the six-month duration. Payment comes in two equal instalments — Rs 15,000 after successful completion of the first three months and Rs 15,000 on completion of the full six months. Both instalments require a minimum attendance of 15 working days per month to qualify.
Lodging, boarding, transport, and medical expenses are not covered. Every intern is responsible for their own accommodation and daily living costs at their assigned location — either Delhi or Haldwani depending on the discipline selected and vacancy available.
Duration and Start Date
The internship runs for six months, tentatively beginning July 1, 2026. Completing the full six months is mandatory. Any intern who does not complete the entire duration will not receive the internship completion certificate — regardless of how much of the programme they attended.
Completion of the internship does not guarantee or imply any offer of employment at DRDO, DIPAS, or any affiliated organisation.
Selection Process
Merit drives the selection. DIPAS evaluates candidates on the basis of their cumulative academic percentage up to the third year first semester. In cases where two candidates hold identical marks, date of birth becomes the tiebreaker — the older candidate receives preference.
Shortlisted candidates may be called for a physical or online interaction before final selection is confirmed. Only selected candidates receive communication about joining procedures via the email address provided in the application form. Unselected candidates receive no communication.
Documents Required
Every application must include the following documents without exception. An Aadhaar card number. A valid college identity card. A bonafide certificate from the institution. Mark sheets covering all completed semesters. A referral or sponsorship letter from the college Principal on official letterhead confirming the student’s enrollment, branch, year, and permission to undertake the internship.
After selection, two additional documents become mandatory before joining. A police verification certificate must be obtained and submitted on the joining date. A No Objection Certificate from the Principal — on college letterhead — confirming the student will be relieved for the six-month internship with a minimum of 15 working days per month must also be submitted.
How to Apply Before May 15, 2026
Applications must be submitted in the prescribed proforma only. Download the official application form from the DRDO vacancies page at drdo.gov.in/drdo/en/offerings/vacancies. Fill all details in capital letters and affix a recent passport-size photograph of 4.5 x 3.5 cm.
Submit the completed application along with all enclosures by post to the following address:
The Director, Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences, Defence Research and Development Organization, Government of India, Ministry of Defence, Lucknow Road, Timarpur, Delhi — 110054.
Write clearly on the envelope: “Application for Paid Internship with Discipline” — stating the specific discipline you are applying for.
Physical receipt of the application at DIPAS by May 15, 2026 is mandatory. Late, incomplete, illegible, or erroneous applications are rejected outright. No correspondence regarding rejected applications will be entertained. Canvassing in any form results in automatic disqualification.
